What is Resin?
Resin is an abbreviation for epoxy resin; Epoxy resin is a system comprised of two elements – resin and hardener. A chemical reaction occurs when the two ingredients are mixed to eventually harden the fluid resin into a solid plastic.
After combining the two elements, the outcome is a highly resistant, clear, shiny surface. For several years it has been used for items such as boards, tables, manufacturing applications, boat construction, and resin statues.

Now, how do we get started with resin art? The first thing you need to know before starting your resin project is how to mix it with other ingredients. The videos on the internet might overwhelm you, but we are here to tell you the step-by-step process of resin mixing. Let’s get started.
How to mix resin for your resin statues and arts
If you have already decided on your mold or image, and color, you can easily slip to the process below –
- Maintain a safe, dust-free environment in a well-ventilated area. Use foil to shield your workspace and the surfaces. Keep all the necessary material near, so you can easily access them whenever you need them.
- Attach solid paint tape to the opposite side of your painting area so that resin drops on the underside of the painting can be quickly removed. Don’t worry about the tape, it will peel away with the residual resin. Some people might prefer to stick the sides of the painting surface. You can do the same, or skip the step – it depends on your taste.
- Now, Place your painting base on a raised surface. Make sure you don’t place it directly on the table, use a cup or something to hold the painting up. If you place your painting base directly on the tabletop, the reverse side would stick due to the resin flowing down.
Note: You can also create resin statues in the same manner as the resin paintings. However, you might want to use molds for your resin structures.
- Make sure your painting ground is horizontal to avoid melting the painting.
- Wear long-sleeved clothing and use disposable nitrile gloves to avoid any stains and glues.
- For 3 minutes, mix the appropriate amount of resin and hardener with a plastic spoon or spatula in the correct ratio.
- Now, it’s time to add the color. Color the resin in plastic cups with different colors. Use the color carefully – a few drops or a hint of pigment is normally sufficient. For resin statues, pour the color in a way that it covers every area. You can pour the resin cups individually on your painting surface or use one of the well-known pouring techniques. There are various methods of color putting that you can follow: Flip Cup, Swirl, Air Swipe, Puddle Pour, Dirty Pour, etc.

- You can guide the flow of the resin on your painting surface in any direction you want with a spatula, knife, foam roller, brush, silicone brush, and other tools. You can also try tilting the painting surface this way and that way to naturally spread the resin. If you are making resin statues, use a brush delicately to spread the color creatively.
- Make sure there are no air bubbles in the painting. If you find any, you can remove them with a hot air blow-dryer.
- Now, cover your resin statues, or paintings to avoid any kind of dust particles. Let the art get cured; it should take around one to two days to completely harden the resin. The fact depends on the density of the resin. You can even apply resin layers to your art piece after 5-6 hours of the previous coating.
Note: If you see any area on your resin artwork that has been peeled off, gently put another layer of resin in that area to cover the damage.
Cleaning up after creating Resin Statues
Resin business is a sticky business. So, you must be prepared to deal with lots of glues and colors and glitters when you are creating resin artwork. It’s wise to cover up the surfaces well before starting with resin. Also, you must not wear your favorite dress when making resin statues and such.
